Hey, Hey Kendra Ann – Blind Uncle Harry (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

As a wonderfully subversive, man-in-the-street, tell-it-like-it-is troubadour of the old world, part storyteller, part social and political agitator, this new single is, by his own admission, “something upbeat before the shit show begins in earnest January 20!” Well, that’s fair enough.

And as always, there is lots to love about Blind Uncle Harry‘s latest sonic slice. Whether it is his trademark Dylan-esque delivery, the slow-burning rise from gentle acoustic to fantastically frenzied folk, the tale of unrequited love of a best friend’s girl, or the wonderfully deft and danceable fiddle-work (played on his Great Uncle Harry‘s violin – who was blind (the Great Uncle, not the violin) and made in Germany in the 1820’s (the violin not the uncle.)

Anyway, it’s a gloriously upbeat jig. It is sing-along-able, the lyrics fun and perhaps, for a few, sadly all too relatable, and the whole thing is the sound of our man in Indiana dancing as the dark clouds gather. Who knows what lies ahead for his country and our world, but I doubt he is going to be short of material for songs for the next four years…not really a silver lining but, well, you know…
