Those aware of their music history will know that the digital and analogue worlds were very separate places for so long. The former was the new kid on the music block bringing innovation and adventure, the latter, often the place of guitar-wielding long hairs resting on established traditions but wielding a reassuring sonic weight. It took a while, but those two worlds eventually warmed to each other and moved into a new age, hand in hand. Well, “Get There Before Noon,” the latest single from the wonderfully named The Afro Nick, sits at the cutting edge of those two now entwined worlds.
Blending bubbling electronica and shimmering digitalia with the slashes of raw rock guitar avant-garde clubland beats with bluesy salvos, this is a mercurial song, one that is hard to put into any specific pigeonhole. But you can say that about all the best music, can’t you?
We hear a lot about revolutions in music, but evolution is where it is at if you are looking for longevity. Here we have a song that is the product of many sonic worlds; it is part rock weight, part pop infectiousness; it is shot through with dance groove and blues solos, and despite that, or perhaps because of it, it is impossible to tag or label or categorize or put in a genre.
How great is that?
