Fools & Mystics – David Singley (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

If ever there was an argument to be made that the singer-songwriter style found a golden age in the late sixties and early seventies, particularly in the USA, even more specifically in California, then Fools & Mystics, David Singley’s new album, is, to some degree at least, it.

It is an album that evokes an era when the world was opening up for the solo songwriter, and the great and the good were flocking from all over the country and beyond to gather and create in Laurel Canyon and the surrounding environs.

But there is much more going on here than sonic nostalgia and pining for better days. Although songs like Paradise feel like they have breezed in from those simpler times, Cartoon Heart leans into more energized country vibes. And then Workin’ All Morning runs on a soulful guitar lick, gorgeous sonic ebbs and flows and bluesy lyricism.

Rather than describing Fools & Mystics as a nod to those glory days, it is better framed as a story continuation. It is a great story, and this is an exciting new chapter.
