Brighter Than This – Derwin Daniels (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

Derwin Daniels has a wide and varied musical background. He was a clarinettist before changing musical paths which led to him drumming for luminaries such as Barbara Lynn, The Jazz Innovators, and the late guitarist Zachary Breaux. And then, as if that wasn’t enough, he spent five years as a saxophonist in the company of Legendary Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner and the Ohio Players.

Brighter Than This sees him continue to build his own solo, saxophone reputation and this deft instrumental blend of sweet, soulful sounds, jazz ornateness, and R&B groove builds on the highly acclaimed debut release, Full Circle.

If most pop and rock songs have the benefit of a lyrical hook to keep the listener moving with them, Daniels proves that he can eloquently and infectiously do the same with his sonic phrasing and musical motifs, and Brighter Than This is as addictive and ear-wormy as any pop lyric or rock riff doing the rounds that you could care to mention.
