Lost Island – Peter Calandra (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

Not all music has to fire you up and act as the soundtrack to a night out. Not all music is looking to create a new fad or lead the charge of some new musical music. Some music is more than happy in its own sonic skin, happy to use the musical building blocks already available to it and create something both recognisable and wonderfully unique.

Lost Island, taken from Peter Calandra’s album The Blue Light, is just a slice of music. The idea of ambient instrumental piano music is nothing new, but as is always the way, it ain’t what you do; it’s the way that you do it. And what Peter Clanadra does here is nothing short of exquisite.

Lost Island is fashioned from simple and understated piano lines and Neo-classical grace, lingering chords floating away on the breeze before another single note is ushered in. It is the sound of deftness and delicacy at work, well-placed notes conjuring wonderful atmospheres in the spaces between them. It is also a sound that conjures the rolling waves and sea breezes, the isolation and slight air of melancholy that the title suggests.

A gorgeous, calm and restrained piece of music.
