Taken from the glorious Anhedonia album, Hoped You Couldn’t Tell is actually one of the straighter pop-rock tracks to be found amongst its cinematic glitz and sonic glamour. That is not to say that the song isn’t created from some clever music choices but the combination of a more easily accessible sound and such cool musical motifs which run around the edges does make it the perfect single, a fine taster of and teaser for the album.
But albums aside, there is lots to say about the song for its own sake. It is steeped in emotion, universally relatable, easy on the ear and instantly likeable and it does all that without resorting to all the usual tricks and traps of the modern pop song.
I guess once you have a great song you don’t need to resort to gimmicks and this is a great song.
